Prevention
The cause of OCD is unknown but specialists associate it with changes in the body's natural chemistry, genetics, learning it over time from family or friends. There is no way to prevent this disorder but it is recommended to receive treatment as soon as possible to prevent it from worsening and the symptoms from altering the quality of life and daily activities.
Treatment
Treatment for OCD can vary depending on the severity or intensity of the patient's symptoms. Medication, psychotherapy or a combination of both is prescribed to help people carry out daily activities normally.
Psychotherapy works to learn to control compulsions and obsessions in order to have a better quality of life. Antidepressant medications approved to treat OCD include:
Clomipramine for adults and children 10 years of age.
Fluoxetine for adults and children 7 years of age
Fluvoxamine for adults and children 8 years of age
Paroxetine for adults only
Sertraline for adults and children 6 years of age
